The Engagement
| Dave: | Last Thanksgiving holiday, Wenda and I
figured we really wanted to make a commitment to each other, so we set out
to look for a Promise ring. The sales people, of course, took us straight
to the diamond ring section. I gasped (ouch, that's expensive) and Wenda
almost fainted, because she had never admired diamonds, to the point of
fear. So, we got the sales person to take us to the semi-precious stone
section. Wenda and I both looked at all the rings, and independently chose
the same ring. Of course, Mom called and wanted to know what we were up
to, and when we were coming for turkey dinner that day. We said we'd be
there, said our farewells, and then we completed the purchase. The only
problem, we had to wait a day for the ring to be sized.
The next day, we went in to pickup the ring. It fit like a charm and Wenda loved it. We drove over to Robert Burnaby Park. Wenda and I then went for a walk. I took her over to the swings and sat down. I leaned towards her, and asked her if she'd like to marry me, someday. She accepted and I placed the ring on her finger. In leaning over to give me a kiss, she kind of fell for me. I'll let her fill you in on that part. |

| Wenda: | I need to rewind back to Thanksgiving
night. Dave dropped me off at my parents' house, so that I could eat
with them and he returned to his parents' home. While Dave was away,
my Mom mentioned that she knew that something was going on. It was
clear to her that we had established a deeper commitment. I didn't
know how to answer. We had already bought the ring but we had
planned to wait to show it until Dave had spoken to my Dad. That
plan backfired. So, I told my Mom that we had purchased a promise
ring, not an engagement ring. The following day one of my closest
friends asked if we planned to marry. She then told me that at this
age there is no difference between an engagement ring and a promise
ring. Apparently, one of Dave's brothers had mentioned the same
thing to him. These conversations led to an engagement instead of a
step in that direction.
Ok, now I can get back to where Dave left off. After Dave proposed, I immediately accepted. In my excitement, I pulled my swing over to him to give him a kiss. Unfortunately, my feet were not planted. The swing pulled me backwards and I flipped backwards over my swing. Dave was quick to drop down to the ground to pick me up. However, I was quicker to stand up. It looked as if I had planned to get Dave down on his knees, since he had proposed while sitting. |

| Dave: | So now we were 'engaged'. Christmas was now approaching and I was thinking about Wenda a lot. I wanted to get her something special. We spent a lot of time looking for gifts for other people, and out of curiosity, we decided to visit the diamond stores once again. This was a bit of a hit and miss affair, but at one point we found something. Wenda loved the look and feel of one ring in particular. We got the information down, and went home. This ring wound up being on both of our minds constantly. One day, Jennifer happened to be at the mall with us, and Wenda wanted her to see the ring we had liked. We went back to the store, and it was no where to be seen. As it turned out, we found another customer right next to us holding the very ring that we liked. He was getting all his information together to make the decision and potential purchase on his next visit. Right then and there, I decided that we were buying the ring, because we couldn't find any others that were remotely similar. It was, after all, worth the cost for my future wife's happiness. Once again, we had to wait and come back another day to pickup the ring. | |
| Wenda: | After picking up the "Diamond" ring, Dave said that we had to drive around until he picked the ideal place to give it to me. In the end, he picked Central Park. There were two inches of snow and the wind was quite chilly. I insisted that I would not survive outside for too long. Dave insisted on a romantic walk around the lake. We walked towards the light of a cabin. Once we got there, he was prepared to deliver a special speech. However, I was too cold to stand still. | |
| Dave: | Since it was so cold (even for me), we went back to the Jeep where I spoke my undying love to Wenda and presented her with the ring. From that point on, we started on our lives together, and a lot of work to plan a wedding. |
